Suspicious fire at Vallejo mayor's law office being investigated as arson

VALLEJO -- Someone appears to have torched the law offices of Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis, fire and police officials said Saturday.

A fire that gutted the Davis' front office on Tuolumne Street across from the Solano County Superior Court early Saturday is considered suspicious, police and fire officials said.

"We're investigating it as arson at this time," Vallejo police Lt. Sid De Jesus said. "We don't know for sure, but we suspect it's an arson case ... The cause and origin is yet to be determined, but because it's an office occupied by the mayor, we're looking at this from every investigative aspect that we can."

Reached by phone, Davis said that to describe himself as "upset, is an understatement."

He said he was awakened at about 1:30 a.m. by a phone call from Fire Chief Paige Meyer and knew it was going to be bad news.

"Any time the mayor gets a phone call in the wee hours of the morning, it's never good," Davis said. "I really don't know what to say right now."

Davis said he will carry on.

"This is a bump in the road, a temporary hurdle," he said. "And we'll get past it and continue to do what we need to do."

It's too early to name a potential motive for the suspected arson, De Jesus said.

"We're not jumping to conclusions," the lieutenant said. "Both (Davis and Micheal Thompson) are high profile people. It could be a disgruntled client of either attorney that occupied that office." Thompson shares the

office with Davis, and has been a judicial candidate.

Calling the blaze, which appears to have started in the front waiting room area, "very suspicious," Meyer said the single-story office building in the 400 block of Tuolumne Street, was about 50 percent involved when crews arrived shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

"We knocked it down within about 15 minutes, but the building looks like nearly a total loss," Meyer said. The contents, however, were mostly salvageable, he said.

This is the second incident in recent months in which the mayor has been the victim of a possible crime. On May 18, Davis' 11-year-old motorcycle was stolen from the City Hall parking lot.

De Jesus said police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the fire and think they may have seen something suspicious, to call the Vallejo police nonemergency number, 707-552-3285.

Dries Van Noten's Walk of Shame Show

Dries Van Noten - one of fashion's leading playmakers and trendsetters - found the one element that had arguably been missing from his stylish and elegant oeuvre - sex.

Van Noten's clothes, besides being highly influential, have always flattered women; this particularly memorable spring 2013 collection show, staged Wednesday, Sept. 26, in Paris was a loving homage to beauty, but with a naughty twist.

"Red lips, but very well done, and chic but with the hair and a attitude that was a little more, well, sleazy," admitting a chuckling Van Noten backstage.

There was not one bum note in this show, doubly impressive for the designer was working on the edge, taking quite a few risks, trying the unlikely and seeing it work.

Van Noten kept his fabrics super light - his favorite material was a double layer of organza - yet the colors were far from summery, if anything as dull as marsh in fall. Yet they all worked.

The juxtaposition rippled through the collection. The shapes were ladylike and very couture, from the artful turn of jackets and the ballooning sleeves. Yet a posh punk would have loved the looks, many completed by plaid grunge shirts.

As for the models, their messy hair, huge sunglasses and precise red lips, all evoked a hip urban gal.

Hyper organized Van Noten greeted fans backstage sporting a fully-fledged tan. Most designers scramble to finish their collections, often putting in overnight shifts before shows. Not Van Noten, who spent the previous weekend on vacation in Capri.

"We finished this collection in August. I had to. We started selling then. So all I could do was get nervous in Paris," he said.

Faintly louche yet definitely feminine, this was a tour de force by Van Noten, a timely lesson in the power of fashion to evoke emotions and to recall them.

British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

Sales Leadership: The Impact of Creating a ... - Business 2 Community

It occurs almost every time I speak or every initial client visit. Whether your organization is using CRM or not I find that most organizations have not taken the time to define, write out and train their sales team on how to use prescriptive a sales process. Why is this important enough to write about? The Results!

Recently in working with a client we spent about two hours simply documenting what a salesperson should do on each of the various steps of their sales process, it enlightened the existing sales manager and created the beginning of a new sales driven culture for the company. What happened?

    1. In forcing the process of ?thinking through? the logical progression and the actual actions the salesperson should take, we altered the second step and changed ?what ?the salesperson was to say and sell during that stage.

    2. We created one additional professional service product that could be re-sold.

    3. The Sales Manager began to fully understand not only what the steps in the sales process were, but more importantly WHY the salesperson needs to execute on them.

    4. Actual definitions of each action within each stage were specifically defined. Why is this important? Pipeline values become more accurate. Let me describe this in more detail. Let?s assume there is a ?demonstration? stage in your sales cycle, next ask yourself, when do your salespeople move the prospect to the demo stage: When it is scheduled? Or after it is completed? This is an example of the kinds of detail that will come out during the process.

    5. During the sales process your companies Value Proposition must be proven. You can build a step or an action that takes place at the appropriate stage that can validate your messaging. We created what we expect to be a unique idea for the client to prove theirs.

    6. One of the most important aspects of creating a prescriptive sales process is changing the sales process! What I mean is; if you and your competitors use the basic sales stages in the same sequence and say and do the same things no one stands out and prospect becomes confused. When there is confusion, generally there is no decision. Change your sales process to stand out, be different and make the customer remember you. Refer to my previous blog on the End of Solution Sales.

    7. We added a last step: a follow up at 90 days post implementation/installation to validate customer satisfaction and ask for a reference letter.

The next step is for the sales manager to roll you the process, teach the salespeople how to execute and then ?inspect what you expect? that the sales team is using the process as it is defined. Set a 90 day plan in place to implement and evaluate the results; create four or five metrics to measure its effectiveness, validate it is being used and to listen to your team. If it needs to be altered to increase effectiveness that is ok, but before you change-make sure you are fully understand the impacts.

Let me know your thoughts on creating a sales process. What has worked for you? What hasn?t?

(AP) ? The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won't help you win at Angry Birds.

While Albert Einstein's genius isn't included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who's curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

"I can't wait to find out what they'll discover," said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. "I'd like to think Einstein would have been excited."

After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man's brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to researchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lancet. That study showed a region of Einstein's brain ? the parietal lobe ? was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial relationships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imaging technology, it may be difficult for scientists to figure out exactly where in Einstein's brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general brain regions, it doesn't map them with precision to an anatomical model.

"They didn't have MRI. We don't have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don't know where the samples were taken from," said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego. What's more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digitized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with profound amnesia. Known as "H.M." in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in research that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with images of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison's entire brain will be available to the public in December, Annese said.

"There will be another Einstein and we'll do it like H.M.," Annese predicted. For now, he said, it's exciting that the Einstein brain tissue has been preserved digitally before the slides deteriorate or become damaged. The app will spark interest in the field of brain research, just because it's Einstein, he said.

"It's a beautiful collection to have opened up to the public," Annese said.

Some may question whether Einstein would have wanted images of his remains sold to non-scientists for $9.99.

"There's been a lot of debate over what Einstein's intentions were," museum board member Jim Paglia said. "We know he didn't want a circus made of his remains. But he understood the value to research and science to study his brain, and we think we've addressed that in a respectful manner."

Paglia said the app could "inspire a whole new generation of neuroscientists."

Proceeds from sales will go to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md., and to the Chicago satellite museum, which is set to open in 2015 with interactive exhibits and the museum's digital collections.

Big Pimpin' Poetry - The Dish | By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast

In a review of the recent spat of memoirs penned by rappers, James Guida ponders Jay-Z's bonafides as a poet:

In Decoded, Jay-Z reveals himself as an unlikely hip-hop statesman. He likes acts both old and new and from all over the country. This catholic view helps him make the case that rap is rooted in tradition. But is the tradition chiefly a poetic one? ?Rap is poetry,? Jay-Z says, ?and a good MC is a good poet.? Clearly the music is a monster of living vernacular, and has plenty in common with poetry?besides rhythm and rhyme, there?s a love of phrase, simile, and metaphor. But rap is also preeminently oral, sharing qualities with acting, storytelling, and the high arts of bullshitting and invective. It makes more sense to locate its roots elsewhere, in street corner talk, toasting, and other musical genres. The music critic Kelefa Sanneh, reviewing Decoded in the New Yorker, captured the problem nicely: ?Sure, he?s a poet?and, while we?re at it, a singer and percussionist, too. But why should any of these titles be more impressive than ?rapper??? In other words, why the need for literary prestige? After all, rappers enjoy collaborations, gatherings on boats, and the right to squash foes real and imaginary and pun all day without reprisal. And let?s not forget the heart of it, the exaltation of sailing endlessly on a rhythmic current of speech. If Jay-Z wants to be thought a poet, many actual poets would probably jump at the chance to switch places.

Benefits of CAD Design Software in Architecture

In today?s world, technology is becoming more and more advanced and is helping us come up with better, quicker, and more efficient ways of doings things. CAD design refers to computer-based drawings used for planning interiors, architectural structures, and for product design. Gone are the days of architectural blueprints, pencils, compasses and templates. CAD software has managed to change the architecture industry for the better, compared to 2D drafting by hand, CAD and CAAD software is more efficient. The software minimises redrafts, as instead of rubbing out or scrunching up the paper, you can undo actions with the click of a button.

CAD and CAAD (computer-aided architectural design) are very similar in concept, the only different is the computer-aided architectural design software includes more architecture-specific elements, for example, architectural techniques and a database of terms only found in the industry. Both types of software create accurate and complete drawings.

An advantage of CAD or CAAD software (over hand drawings) is the automation feature - this feature will automatically draw a digital representation of your structure from previous drawings. For example, if you drew the front view of a building using CAD then the intelligent software would be able to automatically generate a bird?s eye view from your 3D front view drawing. As long as the software has one 3D view of your building, it will be able to generate all other views saving you the time of drawing every view. CAD software allows architects to manipulate and modify images easily.

CAD software produces more realistic, accurate and comprehensive drawings than sketching by hand. The software can create photo-realistic representations, and can automatically generate other views from a previous drawing. Using CAD gives you access to existing designs so you won?t always have to start from scratch when planning a building, or you will at least have a base-point to start planning from. When an architect chooses to use a previous design without using CAD, it will usually involve tracing over an old plan, which takes a lot more time and energy than using the software to complete designs.

Most architects and architectural firms are using CAD software for a more pleasant and cost-effective experience when planning new buildings. If the client wants to revise a certain aspect of the design, it can easily be edited with a few clicks, saving the architect and client time and hassle.

CAD design software isn?t only used in the architecture industry - it is also beneficial for interior designers for room planning software, for retailers selling kitchens or bathrooms, and for product designers who need to manipulate image design for prototypes before they go into production.

There are companies dedicated to designing software specifically for the interior design market, including bathroom, kitchen and even bedroom design software. Whichever room needs designing in a home or office, this kind of software is ideal for placing fixtures, fittings, furniture and decoration.

Today?s marketplace is competitive for engineers so CAD interior design software allows more time for design modification rather than drafting and redrafting.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Smartphones do not necessarily make for smart owners.

In response to a sharp spike in iPhone thefts from unwitting consumers this year, the New York City Police Department will station officers at Apple Inc. sales locations throughout the city for Friday's release of the new iPhone 5.

The officers will help customers register iPhone serial numbers, or engrave them with unique identification numbers prefaced with the letters "NYC."

So many iPhones and other smartphones have been reported stolen this year that they have driven up citywide grand larceny and robbery statistics, police said.

More than 4,174 Apple device thefts have been reported in New York City this year, up 55 percent over last year, according to the New York Post. An NYPD spokesman did not immediately respond to requests to confirm these statistics.

Anyone with a valuable electronic gadget can register the device with police stationed at 21 Apple sales locations throughout the city on Friday, or at any city police precinct.

Prices for the new iPhone 5 range from $199 to $849, depending on phone capacity and service plans.

Whiplash ? Can You Make a Claim? | Personal Injury Claims

Arguably the most frequent type of injury right after a automobile accident is whiplash. Even a comparatively low speed auto collision can result in it and, while the signs and symptoms can take numerous hours to seem, the consequences can be devastating.

Whiplash happens when an abrupt movement to the physique or head ? i.e. stopping a vehicle abruptly, or getting crashed into by one more automobile ? damages the ligaments, tendons and muscles in 1?s neck. According to the severity of the incident, signs and symptoms differ, but can consist of: loss of mobility in the neck; headaches; pins and needles and numbness in the hands; dizziness and blurred vision; and discomfort in the shoulders, arms or reduce back.

If whiplash has resulted simply because of a automobile accident, and the accident was the fault of a third celebration, the important concerns numerous ask is, ?can I, or should I, claim compensation??

Some think that folks are cashing in on what has been coined ?compensation culture?. Nonetheless, the Citizens Assistance Bureau states that searching for legal compensation is each a civil and legal proper, and in carrying out so, folks are capable to completely recover from an accident, as effectively as make up for any economic losses.

In the situation of whiplash ? a often contested topic, because it can be challenging to prove ? several legal and health-related authorities think that, yes, simply because 1 might potentially shed earnings, incur health-related expenses, or in the a lot more serious instances, turn out to be physically disabled, a claim should be produced.

In addition, researchers into the effects of whiplash think that a delay in signs and symptoms appearing tends to be the norm rather than the exception and that 45 percent of victims can really feel the repercussions of whiplash up to 12 weeks right after the accident occurred. Additionally as a number of as ten percent of whiplash victims could endure from serious physical disability.

As a result, if 1 has suffered from whiplash Consequently of a vehicle accident that was not their fault, it may possibly be pertinent to submit a claim. There are a handful of factors that should be accomplished very first, Nonetheless, to make sure the claim is each correct and effective.

Vitally, if an person suffers whiplash as a consequence of an accident, it is recommended that they go to the hospital or their physician for diagnosis and therapy. Nonetheless, it isn?t a essential action when it comes to creating a claim, and injury claims can be created without having getting noticed a medical professional beforehand. Whilst most automobile insurance coverage policies give cover for injuries sustained in a automobile accident, it is also a point of law injured parties notify their insurance coverage firm and police of any injury incurred.

Even if one particular is not covered by a auto insurance coverage policy, whiplash sufferers can nevertheless potentially seek compensation, and a consultation with a private injury lawyer is a viable choice to find out if a claim can be produced.

If a claim can be created, a solicitor should battle for compensation to cover such items as loss of earnings if the individual is unable to function, health-related care and/or therapy, damage sustained to a auto and for any discomfort incurred.

Fireworks in the early universe: In star-forming galaxies, energy bursts from massive central black hole accretion

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Galaxies in the early universe grew fast by rapidly making new stars. Such prodigious star formation episodes, characterized by the intense radiation of the newborn stars, were often accompanied by fireworks in the form of energy bursts caused by the massive central black hole accretion in these galaxies.

This discovery by a group of astronomers led by Peter Barthel of the Kapteyn Institute of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is published September 19 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Our Milky Way galaxy forms stars at a slow, steady pace: on average one new star a year is born. Since the Milky Way contains about a hundred billion stars, the actual changes are very slight. The Milky Way is an extremely quiet galaxy; its central black hole is inactive, with only weak energy outbursts due to the occasional capture of a passing star or gas cloud.

    Bright, exotic radiation

This is in marked contrast to the 'active' galaxies of which there are various types and which were abundant in the early universe. Quasars and radio galaxies are prime examples: owing to their bright, exotic radiation, these objects can be observed as far as the edge of the observable universe. The light of the normal stars in their galaxies is extremely faint at such distances, but active galaxies can be easily detected through their luminous radio, ultraviolet or X-ray radiation, which results from steady accretion onto their massive central black holes.

    Peculiar exotic objects

Until recently these distant active galaxies were only interesting in their own right as peculiar exotic objects. Little was known about the composition of their galaxies, or their relationship to the normal galaxy population. However, in 2009 ESA's Herschel space telescope was launched. Herschel is considerably larger than NASA's Hubble, and operates at far-infrared wavelengths. This enables Herschel to detect heat radiation generated by the processes involved in the formation of stars and planets at a small scale, and of complete galaxies at a large scale.

    Initial inspection

Peter Barthel has been involved with Herschel since 1997 and heads an observational programme targeting distant quasars and radio galaxies. His team used the Herschel cameras to observe seventy of these objects. Initial inspection of the observations has revealed that many emit bright far-infrared radiation.

The Astrophysical Journal Letter 'Extreme host galaxy growth in powerful early-epoch radio galaxies', by Peter Barthel and co-authors Martin Haas (Bochum University, GER), Christian Leipski (Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, GER) and Belinda Wilkes (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, USA), describes their project and the detailed analysis of the first three distant radio galaxies.

    Simultaneous grow

The fact that these three objects, as well as many others from the observational sample, emit strong far-infrared radiation indicates that vigorous star formation is taking place in their galaxies, creating hundreds of stars per year during one or more episodes lasting millions of years. The bright radio emission implies strong, simultaneous black hole accretion. This means that while the black holes in the centres of the galaxies are growing (as a consequence of the accretion), the host galaxies are also growing rapidly.

The Herschel observations thereby provide an explanation for the observation that more massive galaxies have more massive black holes. Astronomers have observed this scaling relationship since the 1990s: the fireworks in the early universe could well be responsible for this relationship.

Barthel: 'It is becoming clear that active galaxies are not only among the largest, most distant, most powerful and most spectacular objects in the universe, but also among the most important objects; many if not all massive normal galaxies must also have gone through similar phases of simultaneous black hole-driven activity and star formation.'
