Manhattanhenge: Sun to align perfectly with New York street grid

Manhattanhenge: The street grid of New York's oldest and largest borough will briefly transform into a Stonehenge-like sundial, as the sun alights up the north and south sides of every cross street.

New Yorkers will be treated to a special sight tonight: Today is one of two days a year when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid. As the sun sets on the Big Apple, it will light up both the north and south sides of every cross street.

The event has been dubbed "Manhattanhenge" for the way it turns New York City into a?Stonehenge-like sun dial.

The sun sets perfectly in line with the Manhattan street grid twice a year, explains astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on the Hayden Planetarium website.

Here are the best viewing times for Manhattanhenge 2012:

May 29 at 8:17 p.m. EDT

July 12 at 8:25 p.m. EDT

There are two other days when the sun isn't perfectly aligned with the grid, but still puts on a show. On these two days, May 30 and July 11 this year, you see a full sun sitting on the horizon when looking down the cross streets, rather than the half orb. Here are the best times to catch the full sun setting on New York City:

May 30 at 8:16 p.m. EDT

July 11 at 8:24 p.m. EDT

The best way to watch Manhattanhenge, Tyson says, is to get as far east as possible on one of the city's major cross streets, such as 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd or 57th streets, and look west toward New Jersey. (The streets immediately adjacent to these wide cross streets will work fine, too, but the view won't be quite as stunning.) Standing on 34th or 42nd street provides a particularly nice view, as the views include the?Empire State Building?and the Chrysler Building. It's a good idea to get to your spot 30 minutes early, so you can beat out the other sun worshippers.

Colorectal Cancer in 2012 by Katelin Heembrock | CPR St. Louis ...

By at May 30, 2012 | 7:14 am | Print

In 2012, cancer caused around 577,190 deaths with the number increasing. Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States. Cancer is a type of disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths in the United States, with it being the 3rd most common cancer found in men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates that for 2012, there will be about 51,690 deaths caused from colorectal cancer in the United States.

Colorectal cancer starts in the large intestine or the rectum. Most cases of colorectal cancer begin as small, noncancerous clumps of cells called adenomatous clumps. The polyps may not produce a symptom, which in return causes the colorectal cancer to go unnoticed. This cancer can be very dangerous, but if detected at an early stage it can become curable. Some of the symptoms for colorectal cancer include abdominal pain, blood in the stool, diarrhea, narrow stools, and unknown weight loss. If a person has any of these symptoms and is age 50 and older then they should get screened for this cancer. If colorectal cancer runs in the patients? family history then it is recommended that you get screened at an earlier age.

There are five ways to test for colorectal cancer. The five ways are fecal occult blood test (FOBT), sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, virtual colonoscopy, and double contrast barium enema (DCBE). The FOBT checks for hidden blood in stool. In the sigmoidoscopy the rectum and lower colon are examined using a lighting instrument called a sigmoiodoscope. During a colonoscopy the upper part of the colon is examined using a different lighting instrument called a colonoscope. During the colonoscopy cancerous and precancerous growths can either be removed or biopsied and examined in case the sigmoidoscopy missed anything. In a virtual colonoscopy, special x-ray equipment is used to produce pictures of the colon and rectum. A computer can then show any polyps and other abnormalities. During the DCBE the colon is x-raid after the patient is given an enema with a barium solution. The barium solution allows for air to be introduced into the colon, which helps outline the colon and rectum for the x-ray.

Although there is not one single cause for colorectal cancer, some scientists associate a high fat, low fiber diet and red meat with it. This cancer has 4 stages, with 0 being very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine, up to IV, meaning that cancer has spread to the organs. Colorectal cancer offers 3 different treatments. The first one is a colectomy, which is a surgery where you remove all the cancer cells. The next one is chemotherapy, which uses drugs to kill fast growing cells in your body. The last treatment they use is radiation therapy; this destroys cancerous tissue by using high energy.

The survival rate for colorectal cancer can be positive if caught early enough. Living a healthy lifestyle and taking care of yourself can really increase your chances of a long and happy life.

It's up for grabs now via Google Play, but before you do that, there's a vid waiting for you past the break.

CHKDSK is changing how it works (step 1 of 1) 56 percent completed...

PC users of a certain age will be all too familiar with defragging and disk checking, normally as a last-ditch attempt to reinvigorate a flagging or faulty system. Fast-forward to 2012, and Microsoft is reassessing the role of the whole NTFS health model for the modern world (well, Windows 8 at least). It turns out that these days actual corruptions are rare, but people still like to run chkdsk just in case -- or out of habit. In the old approach, health check was either happy or unhappy, and the machine was taken offline for as long as was needed to fix. Even with optimization and improvements in later versions, the galloping sizes of hard drives has swallowed up much of the benefit. In the redesigned model there are four states: healthy, spot verification needed, scan needed and spot fix needed. In any of these states, the system remains online, with the user deciding when to restart if a fix is needed. The reboot process should also be much quicker, with the spot fix already targeted. Advanced users can go a stage further and invoke the spot fix while still online for sections of the disk not in use. The proof, of course, is in the pudding, but anything that involves less death-staring at a disk check is a good thing in our book. Hit the source for a blow-by-blow breakdown.

Rangers' Josh Hamilton joins select club with 4-homer game vs. Orioles (+video)

The Texas Rangers outfielder drove in eight runs with four swings of the bat Tuesday night.

Not even Babe Ruth was able to do what Josh Hamilton of the Rangers did Tuesday night against the Orioles in Baltimore - hit four home runs in a single game - as Texas beat the O's, 10-3.

Hamilton hit three of the blasts to center field and one to left off three different Oriole pitchers at Camden Yards. All the home runs were two-run shots. He ended up going five-for-five at the plate, adding a fifth-inning double.

The Rangers center fielder enjoyed how his teammates reacted as much as hitting the home runs, ESPN.com reported.

"I was saying after I hit two that I had never hit three in a game before. What a blessing that was," Hamilton said. "And then to hit four, it was just an awesome feeling to see how excited my teammates got.

"It reminds you of when you're in Little League and a little kid, and just the excitement and why we play the game. Things like that. You never know what can happen. It was just an absolute blessing."

The 'Big League Stew' Yahoo! Sports blog points out that Hamilton is the 16th major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Hamilton joins such greats as Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt in the select four-homer game club.

Afterwards, Hamilton, a early AL M.V.P. candidate, put his career night in perspective, according to MLB.com.

"Obviously, other than the World Series, it's the highlight of my big league career," Hamilton said.

Hamilton leads the major leagues in hitting with a .406 average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Rangers currently lead the American League West Division with a 20-10 record.

BBC Sports app coming to Sony Bravia TVs, PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray players

While Sony was busy launching its HX8 TVs over in the UK, it let slip another nugget of televisual goodness. That extra BBC Sport coverage that's planned for summer, and available as a TiVo app, will also be coming to UK owners of Bravia TVs (2011 and onwards,) PS3s, and even some Blu-ray players (at a later date). Those 24 channels of HD Olympic action will be translated into live streams, and there will be the usual array of catch-up options too. It's not just the Olympics, either, with most of the Beeb's sports coverage set to be available through the app, along with much of the additional content that was previously dealt with by the Red Button. Sony claims it has worked with the BBC to develop the app, and should be the first to launch it direct on TVs just in time for Wimbledon. It will likely find its way to other Smart TVs too, but no details on which at this time.

Wild Card Playoffs - Pittsburgh Steelers v Denver BroncosGetty Images

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says any notion that he?s angry about the decision to bring in Todd Haley as offensive coordinator, replacing Bruce Arians, is misguided. But Roethlisberger doesn?t completely understand what will change in Pittsburgh, either.

Roethlisberger said on the Rich Eisen Podcast that he hears others saying that Haley will turn the Steelers into a smash-mouth offense, or that Haley will rein Roethlisberger in. But Roethlisberger says that when he talks to Haley he doesn?t hear those things.

?I get a little confused at times because I know so much has been made about us quote-unquote throwing the ball too much, or we?re going back to Steeler football and running the ball more,? Roethlisberger said. ?But in these meetings I?ve had with coach Haley he?s all about the no-huddle, and using our wide receiver weapons, and throwing the ball, and stuff like that, so I?m still confused. I?m not sure what?s going to happen yet.?

Haley has a reputation around the NFL for being anything but a players? coach, but Roethlisberger said he?s going into his relationship with Haley with an open mind, and without any preconceived notions about what Haley will be like.

?You have to form your own opinion, and we?re starting to do that, starting to develop a relationship and we?ll see where it goes,? Roethlisberger said.

As for Arians, Roethlisberger said he cares for his former coach personally, and that?s the reason he felt bad seeing him go.

?Change doesn?t happen a lot in Pittsburgh,? Roethlisberger said. ?They just don?t have a lot of changeover. So any time you lose a coach, a player ? it would be uncomfortable, even, to lose an equipment guy or a training guy because everybody in Pittsburgh is family. So of course it?s going to hurt you and of course change is difficult. But people made such a big deal about us being upset, hissy fits, and nothing like that happened. It?s just you hate to see anybody that?s your family leave. So that was the tough part.?

It remains to be seen whether working with Haley will also be tough for Roethlisberger.
