Vets disability benefits: Law schools curb backlog

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Dustin Allison was riding in an armored vehicle at the head of a convoy in Iraq one morning in 2007 when an improvised explosive device went off, killing the driver and leaving Allison badly wounded.

Shrapnel struck the Utah National Guard platoon leader behind his left ear, fracturing his skull and taking off a small piece of his ear. The radio behind his head was destroyed.

"I was definitely lucky," said Allison, a former Utah State Trooper from the Salt Lake City suburbs who had volunteered for duty in Iraq.

But unlike many wounded in war, Allison bore few outward signs of having been badly hurt. He has a scar, but once he returned to Utah he also found out he was incapable of running without getting sick. He also says he experienced vertigo as a result, but that can be difficult to prove to government bureaucrats looking to safeguard against fraud.

"If you lose your leg it's pretty clear what happened, whereas if you get hit in the head and you get migraines and dizzy and vertigo and all kinds of more subjective things that happen, that makes it harder" to diagnose, said Allison, who now lives in Baltimore.

He joined thousands of others struggling to navigate the Veterans Administration's benefits claims process. But his choice to attend business and law school at the College of William & Mary in 2008 allowed him to become one of the school's first clients for a veterans benefits legal clinic its law school was starting.

The clinic uses law students and a faculty member to tackle complex cases on a pro bono basis in which veterans can have difficulty providing the evidence they need to substantiate their claims. Veterans receive disability compensation for injuries and illness incurred or aggravated during their active military service. The amount of the compensation is based on a rating assigned by the VA.

The cases the clinic takes on often involve post-traumatic stress disorder either from warfare or a sexual assault that there may be no record of. In one case, a World War II veteran who injured his knee in basic training in 1943 didn't report a claim until 1971; the claim was repeatedly denied until the clinic stepped in.

The clinic is being touted by members of Congress as a national model for inexpensively dealing with the Veterans Administration's backlog. Between 2009 and August 2012, the clinic has helped 46 clients with submission of 343 claimed injuries or illnesses.

"At 50 clients you're directly representing at a time, that's certainly not going to impact the backlog in a way that It needs to be. But if you get more law schools across the country to do this work then you're exponentially leveraging the passion and the experience of law students across the country to help with that backlog," said Patty Roberts, director of clinical programs at William & Mary's law school.

The VA has come under heavy criticism for the number of disability claims pending longer than 125 days ? about 570,000. That's nearly two-thirds of all claims pending.

"We want to respect our veterans, but when you've got people waiting, often times in excess of a year to get their claims processed, that's not a good sign," said U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va. "This is a national embarrassment."

Warner has urged Senate colleagues to work with law schools in their states to create similar legal clinics. He also urged VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to help move that process along.

The Williamsburg college has been contacted by White House officials to see what could help replicate the program elsewhere. In response, the school developed a playbook for starting similar legal clinics. So far, Warner's office has forwarded that playbook to about 10 law schools, including those at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Colorado and Oregon State.

On Thursday, the effort gained momentum when U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., introduced a bill that authorizes the VA to provide support to law school programs that provide legal assistance to veterans. The Veterans Legal Support Act of 2013 would allow the VA to spend up to $1 million a year assisting those programs.

Shaheen's office says that since 2008, 30 law schools in 18 states have developed clinical programs that specifically assist veterans in some manner.

Financial assistance is one of the things that could help schools currently helping veterans take on more clients or get other schools' programs off the ground, said Stacey-Rae Simcox, an Army veteran who serves as the managing attorney at William & Mary's Puller Veterans Benefits Clinic.

School officials said it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cost of the clinic because it uses existing space and faculty, but Simcox said William & Mary's program runs on a 'shoestring' budget. Still, she spends part of her time fundraising to help make ends meet and pay for things like psychological assessments and travel to homeless shelters where many veterans reside.

"These clinics don't require that much of an investment, but they do require some," Simcox said.

Simcox said she got the idea to help veterans because she and her husband, who was also an Army lawyer, had such a difficult time navigating the benefits' claim process after he left the military.

"It was complicated and there was a lot of paperwork and the rules were complex. And we realized that if two JAG attorneys were having issues understanding how the system works and figuring out all the paperwork and stuff, that the average soldier or Marine is never going to be able to do it by themselves," she said.

That's something Allison said he has personal experience with.

"It's truly impossible to do it well by yourself," said Allison, whose claims took about two years to resolve. "If you don't provide the evidence, they're going to deny you. If you don't know what you need to provide or what that standard of proof is on your own, you need support somehow."

After his claims were resolved in a little less than two years, Allison spent his final year in law school last year helping out other veterans by working at the clinic.

"I had been in a wounded warrior unit. I know what people have to go through. I was very fortunate. It was an easy choice to feel like I needed to pay it back," he said.

from the nato's: book themed baby shower

our dear friends, jeff and erica, are having their first baby soon(these are the talented people who made that incredible video sharing our marriage story). they're the kind of people that act like they have kids, even though they haven't had any. need a babysitter? they'll come right over. overnight? no big deal! not afraid of newborns, naughty children, or dirty diapers.?ok, scratch that, we're all afraid of what we might find in a diaper.too far?

my B. let's talk about the party.

(erica is singing a song about her new baby in this picture. it was such a sweet song and she followed it with a tap dance. none of that actually happened, but that would have been awesome)

invitations:

i printed off a template like these onto a cream color paper and cut them out. i found little envelopes at hobby lobby and they fit right in. and twine is never a bad idea.

my secret goal for this shower was to not use book paper everything. it's tempting. but i wanted to do something different. it kind of stretches you to not rely on things that seem obvious to do. although i did throw some oversized book paper confetti on the table because i couldn't help myself.

the other goal was not to torture the men. guys generally aren't into baby showers...we must bribe them with drinks and a fire pit. it's the right thing to do.

and something shower atypical is having the party in your front yard. it just sounded fun and inviting, so we did it. there's something special about pulling up and seeing the festivities right there. it breeds excitement... and also, people aren't in your house so the mess stays outside!

oh hey, why not bring a coffee table out to the yard while you're at it?

onto the details. let's talk about napkins! borrrrring. ha. but seriously, let's discuss.
?you can set a napkin out and it's perfectly great. but if you roll the napkin diagonally and tie it with ribbon/twine or tape it with some washi, it makes it feel really special. and it takes up more visual space.

in the spirit of being resourceful, i already had this fabric for the runner, and just cut it in half to make a longer runner. you've seen the cake plates?from minted.com before! and hey, you've seen this kind of cake before just last week at penelope's elephant party. same idea, different theme! build on what you already have. buy some white tablecloths if you host often...great investment.
anyway, changing something old to make it new is kind to your wallet and makes you think a new thought.

dripping icing down tiers is easier that actually icing the cake so naturally i will choose to take the easy way out.?

i did craft a little book to put on the top. it's totally jimmy rigged, but that is why hot glue is your friend. it just needs to last a night, not for years. and it's simply made with scrap paper.?

don't worry about these leaning pencils. the idea is cute, the cake plate wasn't really wide enough. oh well. go with it.

i bought a bunch of reading glasses at the dollar store and use them to hang on things or just set on the table. if you have all your old glasses then yay for you, you saved yourself $5!?

i recovered old books with craft paper and then used books that had hard covers which coordinated with my colors scheme. mix and match!

for the menu: school themed food
-fancy grilled cheese option 1: gruyere cheese, caramelized apples and onions, chopped figs
option 2: chipoltle gouda and bacon
option 3: surprise me. a little of this and that from all of the above

always prep your ingredients earlier in the day. you can caramelize apples and onions the day before and cook your bacon. then just assemble before guests arrive. i used the recipe, grilled cheese for a crowd so that i wouldn't have to stand over a hot stove. it really is genius!

-fancy homemade mac n' cheese

-fruit cups
-spinach, feta, walnut salad
(consider a soup if you are doing this in the fall or winter)

-fancy, local chocolate milk
dessert:
cobbler and cupcakes the favors are just mini journals i bought at a book store for cheap, a pencil, with a stamped message on them and gold washi tape from minted. i already had the stamp, but you can buy them at any craft store.

it was such a fun night! celebrating people we love with people we love.

?parties aren't just about throwing parties. they aren't about making something look awesome to impress other people. parties are really about honoring friends or family who mean so much...seeing their faces light up looking at all the details, it's a tiny bit of thankfulness expressed in cupcakes and decorations and thoughtful details. but really, all it's saying is i love you guys (even though i don't like hugging).?

and also, will you still babysitt my kids when you have your own kid??

and let's get real. i didn't throw this shower by myself. don't do that! you'll stress yourself out.
?thank you ashley and jeremy, steve and maria(you are a grilled cheese master!), and mark nato, my husband who i made craft with me late into the night. you guys are amazing.

Jennifer Mosher, Editor: Why marketing is the hardest task for self ...

My younger daughter works with me. Technically, she works for me, but we get on so well at the office that I think in terms of her working with me.

She spent her gap year working with me, and by the time her gap year was finished, she'd worked out that the last thing she wanted to do was go to uni full-time. Instead, she kept working for me, signing up for various online courses in graphic design, web development etc, and wrote a book. That's right: at the age of 20, she became a published author. And not just any book - it's a full-colour, magazine-style guide to help teenage girls through those difficult years.

We knew she was writing it, and had a photographer friend (Darren Phillips of Darphi Images) doing the photos (in some of the worst weather imaginable), and had managed to get contributions?from a UK 'triple threat' performer (Ben 'R-Tizt' Francis from Luminites) and a careers advisor from New Zealand (Tracy Keith of TMK Consulting), and we helped a little bit here and there as taxi drivers, but for the most part we kept out of it as it was her project.

We expected it to be reasonably good - we had seen the effort she'd been putting into it over two years - but we had no idea how good the book would be, until she showed it to us laid out, formatted, and almost ready to print. And that's when I said, 'Please don't take this to a traditional publisher - please let's do it ourselves.' I still don't quite know why. Perhaps I was worried that they might insist on certain changes to the book, taking it away from what she believed would be best. Or that they would push her into doing?appearances?and things that she wasn't ready for. Or that they would make more money out of it than she did. Perhaps that was it. I knew she would get 10% of the RRP of every book sold, but what if they were making 20% of the RRP after production and promotion? That just wouldn't be fair.

So we funded the printing, and put it out under our own MoshPit Publishing label, which was a good exercise for us anyway as we'd not published a colour book before.

Now, you would think it would be easy to sell a book called The High School Survival Guide - a handbook for the modern teenage girl, wouldn't you??Apparently, not so!

First off, you have to help your author not be embarrassed about having written such a full book at such a young age. My daughter is a reasonably humble kid, and once the book came out, she suddenly wanted to hide. Turns out it is much easier to say 'I'm writing a book' than it is to go around saying 'I have written a book'. Once you've written and?published your first book, you feel like just a teensy bit of a wanker! It gets easier with the second book as by then you start to feel that actually are an author, rather than an imposter. But there's a bit of mind shift with?that?first book.

Once you get your author to?believe?in their book, and themselves, the next thing you have to do is raise awareness of the book so that people will buy it. That's all well and good: we have the internet, we have a shop front, we have our online shop, and we've been able to stock it in a pharmacy and a book store in the local area from time to time. We've done mail outs to high school librarians and school counsellors. Ally has presented in front of 30 high school?liaison?officers. She has written articles for magazines and sent copious copies, in both print and ebook formats, to many magazines and parenting sites. As a mother-daughter/publisher-author team we've presented a double act in front of 170 junior high school girls (now that was an interesting hour!). The book is?available?on Amazon, and from our own online shop, and it has its own website and Facebook page.

But you know what??That's?just not enough. We've?managed?to sell some bulk orders to some high schools for their libraries, but generally speaking, it's one book at a time.

Now, I know part of the reason is that it's not cheap. At $34.95 it's not the sort of spur-of-the-moment book you grab as you're trawling the internet. But it's also not the sort of book you ignore. With young girls falling victim to the most horrendous side effects of low self esteem and poor parenting these days, you would think that so many adults would see it and think 'I must invest in that for my daughter/granddaughter/niece etc'. But no.

So we've?developed?ebook versions (at $4.99) and a free sample which means that potential buyers can decide if they want to invest in the print copy or not. And still it's not enough. And do you know why?

Because there are millions of books out there. Millions. And while there are millions of potential buyers, they need to come into contact with your book. They need to see it probably more than once before they commit to buying it. It has to be a book that they're going to be interested in. And it has to be there, ready and available for them to buy it, at that moment that they decide that this the book that they're going to buy next.

So if you're a self publisher and you're finding it hard to shift your book, don't despair. It doesn't mean (necessarily) that what you've written is crap. It doesn't mean (necessarily) that no one is interested. It is all about being in the right place at the right time.

The best advice I can give you is:

1. Be sure that you've written a good book. See if you can get some sort of feedback from people you don't know - people who are more?likely?going to be honest with you. If perhaps the feedback you're getting suggests that your book isn't as good as you thought it was, then consider pulling it off the 'shelves', polishing it up, and then re-releasing it. If the feedback suggests that it has too many errors, then at least get it proofread prior to re-release. Of course, if you've gone ahead and had 2,000 copies printed and they're taking up parking space in your garage, this isn't so much of an option for you.

2.?Get reviews! Wherever it is up for sale on the internet, ask people you know who have read it to log on and review it. However, make sure you ask them for honest reviews. The worst reviews are glowing five-star reviews from people who are clearly your friends and relatives. One of the most honest five-star reviews I have read was for J-L Heylen's book Wisdom Beyond Her Years. A buyer called KB admitted that they were a bit sceptical, but found it worth the read, despite saying?that the book was a little too ''explainy' for my personal taste, I think we can put that down to this novel being the author's first' and 'Wisdom Beyond her Years is not high literature, but it is a whole lot of fun'.

3. Don't be afraid to change the cover of a print on demand or ebook version. Ally recently changed her cover to the one above from the plainer, less emotional one below, and sold a print version on Amazon almost straight away:

4. Make sure that you or the book have some sort of website. It's all well and good?having a?social media presence, but you also need to be able to reach those people outside of social media - not everybody has a Facebook or Twitter account!

5. Set up author pages and profiles. If you have published through outlets such as CreateSpace, KDP or Smashwords, then take advantage of free marketing opportunities such as the Amazon Author profile page (see mine here:?http://www.amazon.com/Jennifer-Mosher/e/B00BO1OCTY/?for an example) and the Smashwords author profile page.

6. Think laterally. Ally recently wrote?10 Tips for Surviving Teenage Daughters for SchoolMum.net and organised the free sample as a result of a request from Family Deal Friday. This is not sales, it is marketing. And if all the dominoes are lined up correctly, marketing?leads to sales.

7. Find magazines and blogs which need content and send them details of your book. Family Australia Magazine were happy to include The High School Survival Guide on page 6 of their Autumn issue as one of their 'What We Love' items. A good source for Australian writers is SourceBottle (all puns intended!)

8. Keep writing. Write another book, get it out, then use your books to cross promote the other. Ally is now developing plans for a text-only book (rather than an illustrated one) aimed at parents and guardians to complement the girls' book.

9. If you believe in it, don't give up. Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunity and keep plugging it. If it's an ebook or a print on demand book, then time is on your side.?

10. Spread your message as far and wide as you can. You can't expect family and friends to do all your sales work for you!

11. Enter?appropriate?awards. Ally entered her book in the 2012 Global Ebook Awards AND won the best book in the non-fiction teenage literature category! 12. List it on directories and other appropriate places, such as One Thousand Words Plus?(OTW+). If you'd like a coupon for a free life-time listing on OTW+, please contact me. 13. Don't bore people stupid with your 'I've written a book, would you like to buy a copy?' message. Yes, you need to publicise your book, but you also need to learn when to stop talking about it!

These are not the only things you can do - there are others, and if you'd like to share what's worked for you and what hasn't, feel free to leave a comment below.

Rocket fired from Lebanon toward Israel

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A rocket was fired from south Lebanon towards Israel on Sunday, Lebanese security sources said, and residents of a northern Israeli town reported hearing a blast.

"An explosion was heard. Soldiers are searching the area. The cause is still being investigated," an Israeli military spokeswoman said. A second Israeli military source said the explosion was probably caused by a mortar.

The incident came amid heightened tensions in the region over Syria's civil war. Damascus has said it will respond to Israeli air strikes earlier this month against suspected Iranian missiles in Syria destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The rocket launch could be heard from the Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 km (six miles) from the Israeli border, residents in the Lebanese town said.

Earlier on Sunday, two rockets were fired into a Shi'ite district of southern Beirut after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah pledged his Shi'ite Muslim guerrilla group would fight in Syria until victory for President Bashar al-Assad.

Assad is battling a two-year rebellion in which the United Nations says at least 80,000 people have been killed.

Exclusive: Intel CEO shakes up units, creates "new devices" group - source

By Noel Randewich

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp's new chief executive, Brian Krzanich, has reorganized key business groups and created a "new devices" unit, according to a source who has seen an internal email, shaking up the world's top chipmaker days after formally assuming control.

The chipmaker's main product groups - including the PC client group, mobile communications and data center unit that previously reported to Intel Architecture group chief Dadi Perlmutter - now report directly to Krzanich, the source said, citing the email sent to employees.

"As your CEO I am committed to making quick, informed decisions. I am committed to being bolder, moving faster, and accepting that this means changes will be made knowing that we will listen, learn and then make adjustments in order to keep pace with a rapidly changing industry," Krzanich said in the email, according to the source.

Krzanich, a 30-year Intel veteran, officially took over as CEO last week and said that under his leadership, the top chipmaker will be more responsive to customers in an intensified focus on the fast-growing smartphone and tablet market where it lags rivals.

President Renee James, formerly head of the software arm, will now also oversee the company's sprawling global manufacturing operations and take on additional parts of security efforts.

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy confirmed Krzanich sent the internal email describing the chipmaker's reorganization. He said Intel presidents have traditionally been responsible for managing the manufacturing operations.

Mike Bell will head up Intel's newly formed "new devices" group," which Mulloy said will focus on emerging product trends.

Shares of Intel were up 0.6 percent at $24.23 in early afternoon on the Nasdaq.

Lenovo's IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC finds a home in Treehouse workstation, other funky furniture

Looking for a place to stick that super-sized slate? You might opt to mount it in a wooden table modeled after a treehouse, or a piece of furniture designed to accommodate a digital "family game night." Of course, you'd clearly be drawing some inspiration from two such concepts that feature Lenovo's Horizon Table PC as the star of the show -- both, along with a third project that employs a more traditional bar-stool concept, will debut at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair next week in New York City. (You're going, right?) It's certainly not the first time we've witnessed a non-traditional marriage of form and function, but considering that we have yet to see these gigantic 1080p tablets on the street, it's a bit of a curiosity at the moment.

Castro?s new legal team says he?ll plead not guilty

Ariel Castro is arraigned in Cleveland, May 9, 2013 . (Getty Images)

Lawyers for Ariel Castro say he'll plead not guilty to charges of kidnapping and raping three women while holding them captive for a decade in his west Cleveland home.

"The initial portrayal by the media has been one of a 'monster' and that's not the impression that I got when I talked to him for three hours," Craig Weintraub, one of Castro's lawyers, told Cleveland's WKYC-TV late Tuesday.

The 52-year-old is being held on an $8 million bond in Cuyahoga County Jail and is under a suicide watch.

"He doesn't have a television, doesn't have radio, doesn't have magazines, no access to newspapers," Jaye Schlachet, another Castro lawyer, said. "He's completely isolated from society."

[Related: Castro brothers break silence on Cleveland case]

Castro is suspected of kidnapping Michelle Knight in 2002, Amanda Berry in 2003 and Gina DeJesus in 2004, and then holding them captive in his west Cleveland home. DNA tests confirm he fathered a daughter with Berry in 2006.

"I can tell you that Mr. Castro is extremely committed to the well-being and positive future for his daughter, who he loves dearly," Schlachet said. "And if people find that to be a disconnect from what he's alleged to have done, then the people will just have to deal with it. We just know how he feels about his little girl."

Castro's attorneys say that how he came into contact with the women will be revealed "as the case progresses." And they say they may seek a change of venue to get a fair trial.

"I know the media wants to jump to conclusions, and all the people in the community want to say terrible things about the person who's accused," Schlachet added. "We are not even at the beginning of the process. If this was a marathon race, we're not even at the starting line yet."

'Best estimate' of melting ice caps

Researchers have published their most advanced calculation for the likely impact of melting ice on global sea levels.

The EU-funded team says the ice sheets and glaciers could add 36.8cm to the oceans by 2100.

Adding in other factors, sea levels could rise by up to 69cm, higher than previous predictions.

The researchers say there is a very small chance that the seas around Britain could rise by a metre.

The last Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was highly detailed about many aspects of Earth's changing climate in the coming decades.

Advanced models

While it estimated that sea levels could rise by 18-59cm by 2100, the report was very unsure about the role played by the melting of ice sheets and mountain glaciers.

To fill the void, the EU-funded experts from 24 institutions in Europe and beyond tried to produce more accurate figures on the melting of Antarctica and Greenland and how this might swell the oceans.

Called Ice2sea, the group of scientists has made what it terms the "best estimate" yet of the impact of melting based on a mid-range level of carbon emissions that would increase global temperatures by 3.5C by the end of this century.

"For that one scenario we have an ice sheet and glaciers contribution to sea level rise of between 3.5 and 36.8cm by 2100," said Prof David Vaughan from the British Antarctic Survey, who is the co-ordinator of the Ice2sea programme.

While the range is wide, the scientists say it is a relatively robust calculation and based on several advances in modelling since the last IPCC report.

"In order to be able to model the ice sheet properly, you need to be able to resolve things down to hundreds of metres," said Prof Tony Payne from the University of Bristol.

"That's quite a task when an ice sheet is a thousand kilometres or more in size; that's a very demanding computational task. What we found is that the Pine Island Glacier, the poster child of sea level rise in the Antarctic - that will continue through to the end of the century and very little else happens."

Despite the improvements, there are still many factors that are difficult to include in models. To get around this, the leading researchers were asked to estimate the worst-case scenarios.

They concluded there was a one-in-20 chance that the melting ice would drive up sea levels by more than 84cm, essentially saying there is a 95% chance it would not go above this figure.

While ice melt is a major contributor to the height of the seas, there are other important factors especially thermal expansion caused by the warming of the waters. This contributes about a half of the observed 3mm rise in sea levels every year.

Taken together with the ice melt estimate, the scientists say the overall, maximum impact on the seas by 2100 will be a rise of 69cm - just 10cm higher than the IPCC projection in 2007, termed AR4.

"What we are talking about is a reduction in uncertainty - we find we haven't changed the number enormously compared to AR4," said Prof Vaughan. "We've added maybe another 10cm but the level of certainty we have around that is actually higher than it was in the AR4."

The researchers also included projections for sea level rise in Europe that includes the effects of thermal expansion, ice melt and storm surges. In these scenarios, the British Isles could face an increase of slightly over a metre by 2100 - enough to overwhelm the Thames Barrier and see London flooded once every 10 years.

But the scientists stress that there is a 95% chance that these numbers will not be reached.

"The previous IPCC identified this gap in our knowledge. We've addressed that gap and what we've found is not scary," said Prof Payne.

"We're always talking about tens of centimetres, maybe a metre tops. None of the experiments are suggesting 2, 3, 4m and that's different to the literature that existed before Ice2sea."

However, the scientists stressed that sea level rise in line with their projections could still make some islands in the Pacific uninhabitable. And if global emissions of carbon dioxide are not curtailed then the actual level of the sea by 2100 could be significantly higher than the Ice2Sea estimates.

Caregivers: 3 Easy Tips to Remember your Health Checkups ? AARP

Caregiving | Home & Family | Personal Health Print

Tips for busy caregivers to remember to get their regular health checkups.I finally did it. After more than two years with two painful teeth, I finally got my dental check up and teeth cleaning! Unfortunately, my delay has caused the?need for two new crowns. I?ve always done this regularly, but since I started intensive caregiving that has gone down the drain (as have my other regular checkups). I feel like I should be at a support group meeting saying, ?My name is Amy, and I?m a caregiver who has neglected my own health.? I know I?m not the only one?and today is National Women?s Checkup Day, so I decided to come clean. Any other caregivers out there want to join me in fessing up?!

National Women?s Checkup Day is a nationwide effort, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services? Office on Women?s Health, to encourage women to schedule and receive checkups. Regular checkups are vital to the early detection of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, mental health illnesses, sexually transmitted infections, and other conditions.

This is an especially important issue for women who are caregivers. We tend to be so busy and depleted, juggling caregiving, our families and many of us are also working too. We relegate our own needs to the bottom of the list.

So how can we, as caregivers, move our own checkups, immunizations?and regular screenings up the list? I?ll tell you what worked for me: Barb, a dear friend from college who is also a caregiver, left me a voicemail and compassionately, but firmly, said (repeatedly), ?You are amazing, but you have to get your teeth cleaned, you have to do the things you need to do for you.? I know she has the same challenges, and knowing she took the time to call me was motivating. Or maybe it was just nice to have someone else tell me what to do when I am so tired of making decisions. Whatever it was, the directive support of a friend did the trick this time.

Here are some other suggestions to help you keep up with your regular checkups:

  1. Enlist friends and family: ?Ask for gentle reminders?and reinforcement when you make the appointment!
  2. Schedule ahead: When you see a doctor, schedule your next appointment before you leave the office.
  3. Use technology: Check out the myriad apps and websites that offer free reminders:
  • Sign up for the American Cancer Society to send you screening reminder emails; some laboratories, such as Quest Diagnostics, send health reminder emails for women?s health, diabetes, heart disease and more; many health care systems or insurance companies offer free reminders for a variety of checkups and screenings.
  • If you have a Smartphone, look for a ?Reminders? app where you can list tasks and set reminder dates, times and sounds.
  • Use a ?to-do? list app such as Producteev, Toodledo or Astrid; make a list for your health-related tasks (and schedule alerts).

Stay tuned for more tips for caregivers in my upcoming book, Juggling Work and Caregiving available fall of 2013.

It was a real relief to get my teeth checked.?Now, I?m going to call and schedule my (behind schedule) mammogram! Hope you?ll do the same.

Brenda Chapman, director of "Brave" prior to being replaced during production, doesn't like how Disney has redesigned the film's main character Merida to better fit its line of princesses.

"I think it's atrocious what they have done to Merida," she wrote to her local newspaper, the Marin Independent Journal. "When little girls say they like it because it's more sparkly, that's all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy 'come hither' look and the skinny aspect of the new version. It's horrible!"

FILM REVIEW: "Brave"

"Merida was created to break that mold -- to give young girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance," Chapman explained.

The new look of Merida has been criticized since being announced as being the 11th princess to join Disney's character line. The character, seen here, eliminates the bow and arrow wielded Merida in the film and makes alterations to the dress. One Jezebel writer noted that the heroine was given a "pretty pretty princess makeover."

A Change.org letter addressed to Disney's chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger, stated: "The redesign of Merida in advance of her official induction to the Disney Princess collection does a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls' capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired."

STORY: Pixar's braintrust on the making of "Brave" and the studio's first princess

The petition attached to the letter has been signed by more than 100,000 individuals.

Disney responded to the criticism in a statement to Yahoo! Shine: "Merida exemplifies what it means to be a Disney Princess through being brave, passionate, and confident and she remains the same strong and determined Merida from the movie whose inner qualities have inspired moms and daughters around the world."

Chapman, who ended up sharing the 2013 Oscar for Best Animated Feature onstage for the film, was replaced by Mark Andrews as director of "Brave" midway through production of the film.

Police vow to solve shootings of 19 in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A medical student who witnessed the shooting that wounded 19 people during a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans said Monday the gunman appeared to be firing in a controlled manner, but it wasn't clear if he was trying to hit specific people.

Police released a grainy surveillance video that shows the crowd suddenly scattering in all directions, with some falling to the ground after the shooting on Sunday. They appear to be running from a man in a white T-shirt and dark pants who turns and runs out of the picture. The image isn't clear, but police say they hope someone will recognize him and notify investigators. Investigators are offering a $10,000 reward.

Medical student Jarrat Pytell said he was walking with friends near the parade route when the crowd suddenly began to break up.

"I saw the guy on the corner, his arm extended, firing into the crowd," Pytell said Monday.

"He was obviously pointing in a specific direction he wasn't swinging the gun wildly," Pytell said.

Pytell said he wouldn't recognize the gunman's face but that his attire matched the images released by police.

Three people remained in critical condition Monday. Authorities said it appeared that nobody suffered life-threatening wounds and most had been discharged from the hospital. Ten men, seven women and two 10-year-old children were wounded. The children suffered only graze wounds.

Pytell said he helped a woman with a serious arm fracture ? he wasn't sure if it was caused by a bullet or a fall ? and others including a man who was bleeding seriously from an apparent bullet wound.

Pytell said he and a friend had taken refuge in a ditch when the shooting broke out. The shooting was over quickly and he got only a quick look at the gunman.

Police believe more than one gun was fired in the burst of Sunday afternoon violence ? the latest to flare up around a celebration this year ? and they have vowed to swiftly track down those responsible. Detectives were conducting interviews, collecting any surveillance video they could find and gathering evidence from the scene. Cellphone video taken in the aftermath of the shooting shows victims lying on the ground, blood on the pavement and others bending over to comfort them.

It's not the first time gunfire has shattered a festive mood in the city this year. Five people were wounded in January after a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, and four were wounded in a shooting in the French Quarter in the days leading up to Mardi Gras. Two teens were arrested in connection with the MLK shootings; three men were arrested and charged in the Mardi Gras shootings.

"The specialness of the day doesn't appear to interrupt the relentless drumbeat of violence," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a news conference outside a hospital where victims were being treated Sunday night.

Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for the FBI in New Orleans, characterized the shooting as street violence.

As many as 400 people came out for the second-line procession ? a boisterous New Orleans tradition ? though only half that many were in the immediate vicinity of the shooting, Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said. Officers were interspersed with the marchers, which is routine for such events.

Second-line parades are loose processions in which people dance down the street, often following behind a brass band. They can be planned events or impromptu offshoots of other celebrations. They trace their origins to the city's famous jazz funerals.

Outside the hospital Sunday night, Leonard Temple became teary as he talked about a friend who was in surgery after being shot three times during the parade. Temple was told the man was hit while trying to push his own daughter out of the way.

"People were just hanging out. We were just chilling. And this happened. Bad things always happen to good people," said Temple, who was at the parade but didn't see the shootings.

A social club called The Original Big 7 organized Sunday's event. The group was founded in 1996 at the Saint Bernard housing projects, according to its MySpace page.

The neighborhood where the shooting happened is a mix of low-income and middle-class row houses, some boarded up. As of last year, the 7th Ward's population was about 60 percent of its pre-Hurricane Katrina level.

The crime scene was about 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometers) from the heart of the French Quarter and near the Treme neighborhood, which has been the centerpiece for the HBO TV series "Treme."

Sunday's violence comes at a time when the city is struggling to pay for tens of millions of dollars required under federal consent decrees to reform the police department and the city jail. The agreement to reform the police department came after a scathing Justice Department report in 2011 said the city's officers have often used deadly force without justification, made unconstitutional arrests and engaged in racial profiling. A series of criminal investigations focused on a string of police shootings in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The mayor initially backed the police reform but is trying to put the brakes on the plans, saying the city can't afford to spend millions required under the two agreements.

Shootings at parades and neighborhood celebrations have become more common in recent years as the city has struggled with street crime, sometimes gang-related.

But police vowed to solve Sunday's shooting. Serpas said it wasn't clear if particular people in the second line were targeted, or if the shots were fired at random.

"We'll get them. We have good resources in this neighborhood," Serpas said.

Navy to launch unmanned aircraft from carrier

ABOARD THE USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (AP) ? The Navy will make its first attempt to launch an unmanned aircraft the size of a fighter jet from an aircraft carrier on Tuesday, marking a significant step toward the possibility of expanded drone use in future conflicts.

The X-47B can reach an altitude of more than 40,000 feet, has a range of more than 2,100 nautical miles and can reach high subsonic speeds. It is also fully autonomous in flight. It relies on computer programs to tell it where it to go unless a mission operator needs to step in. That differs from other drones used by the military, where someone directs the plane from a remote location.

While this aircraft isn't intended for operational use, the military is using the information it gathers during these demonstrations to develop other unmanned, carrier-based planes.

Having a carrier-based drone is considered particularly valuable because it can be deployed around the world without needing the permission of other countries to serve as a home base. There has been pushback against the use of drones from some nations that say the strikes erode the U.S. image overseas. Navy officials say the planes will provide around-the-clock intelligence, surveillance and targeting capabilities.

Some critics have said the military's use of drones, furthered by Tuesday's tests, create concerns over their limited human oversight. They worry the next step will be granting the drones control over launching attacks.

Human Rights Watch called for a pre-emptive prohibition of their development and use in a report issued in November titled "Losing Humanity: The Case against Killer Robots."

While current models retain some level of supervision over decisions whether to use lethal force, the group predicts that fully autonomous weapons could be developed within decades that select and engage targets with no human intervention.

"Human Rights Watch and Harvard Law School's International Human Rights Clinic believe that such revolutionary weapons would not be consistent with international humanitarian law and would increase the risk of death or injury to civilians during armed conflict," the report said.

Before the planes become commonplace, however, the military has to prove they planes can operate in the harsh conditions aboard an aircraft carrier at sea. The aircraft is set to taxi on the flight deck of the USS George H.W. Bush while it is in the Atlantic Ocean and use a steam catapult to launch, just like a traditional Navy warplane does.

"These are exciting times for the Navy as we are truly doing something that has never been done before ? something I never imagined could be done during my 29-year naval career," Rear Adm. Mat Winter, the Navy's program executive officer for unmanned aviation and strike weapons, wrote in a Monday blog post.

While the tailless plane won't land on the aircraft carrier on Tuesday, the Navy plans to conduct those tests soon. Landing on a moving aircraft carrier is considered one of the most difficult challenges Navy pilots face. Following the test launch, the plane will make a series of approaches toward the aircraft carrier before landing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.

Earlier this month, the Navy successfully conducted a landing at that air station where the X-47B used a tailhook on the aircraft to catch a cable and suddenly stop, just as planes landing on carriers have to do.

In the 2014 fiscal year, the Navy plans to demonstrate that the X-47B can be refueled in flight. The program cost is $1.4 billion over eight years. Northrop Grumman was awarded the primary contract in 2007.

Alonso thrills home fans with Spanish GP win

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Fernando Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix by nearly 10 seconds in a dominant performance in front of his home fans on Sunday to close the gap on championship leader Sebastian Vettel and get back in the Formula One title race.

Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen finished second for the third straight race, with Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa third as most drivers chose a four-stop strategy due to ongoing problem with Pirelli's fast-degrading tires. That issue remains a big concern as tires still shred far too easily despite pre-race modifications.

Starting from fifth place, Alonso won his second race this season, showing that Ferrari can challenge Red Bull for pure speed. Alonso was easily quicker than Vettel, with the three-time defending champion finishing 38.2 seconds behind in fourth ahead of teammate Mark Webber.

"In the four years with Ferrari this is the best (car) we've had," Alonso said. "I realized the race was in our pockets if we don't do mistakes."

He climbed on top of his Ferrari and waved a Spanish flag gleefully as he encouraged applause from the fans, who broke into chants of "Alonso, Alonso."

It was Alonso's second win in Barcelona ? the first coming in 2006 ? and his seventh career podium on the Circuit de Catalunya.

"It's very special winning at home and it doesn't matter how many times you repeat it," Alonso said. "Very long last laps because you want to finish as quickly as possible. Difficult qualifying as we were not too quick yesterday but we knew we had the pace on the long runs. We did it and everything worked perfect."

More importantly, the two-time former champion closed the gap on Vettel from 30 to 17 points, moving up to third overall. Raikkonen is only four points behind Vettel, who leads with 89 after five races.

"We have to just take what we can from every race," said Raikkonen, who was 9.3 seconds behind Alonso. "We just have to keep working as a team to achieve the biggest goal we can."

Massa's performance was arguably even better than Alonso's, as he started from ninth due to a grid penalty in qualifying.

"I was a little disappointed after qualifying, but the race was very good, we were very aggressive," Massa said. "I think we are in the right direction so I hope from now on we are fighting for the podium in every race."

Mercedes had a disappointing day after Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton started on the front grid. As has been the case this season, the Mercedes cars ? which are fast in qualifying ? again lacked race pace and durability as Rosberg finished sixth and Hamilton drifted back to 12th and was a lap off the pace.

"We have just got a lot to do to catch up with the others, but we will get there," Hamilton said.

He made a terrible start as Vettel flew past him at the first corner and Alonso found a small gap to surge past Raikkonen on turn one and then past Hamilton on the outside of turn three to move quickly into third.

Rosberg held on at the front as Massa quickly climbed from ninth to sixth and Grosjean went the other way.

Jenson Button's miserable weekend looked set to continue as he drifted from 14th to 17th, although he salvaged some pride with a credible eighth-place finish, holding off a late surge from teammate Sergio Perez to finish behind Paul di Resta.

"Turn one was a mess so to finish eighth probably wasn't too bad," Button said. "But there is a lot of work still to do."

Grosjean had been optimistic heading into the race after securing his first podium of the season with third place in Bahrain. But the Frenchman's back wheels locked up early on and he had to pull out due to mechanical failure.

With fears over tire degradation prominent, drivers took early pit stops.

"At this rate, F1 is going to become a pit-stop contest with a few race laps thrown in," Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 F1 champion, said during television commentary. The issue was highlighted when strips of rubber started flying off Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso less than 40 laps into the race. He retired late on.

With a third of the race gone, Ferrari's pace was unrelenting and Alonso led Vettel by four seconds before pitting for the second time.

Raikkonen won the season-opening Australian GP on a three-stop strategy but the Finn lost time the longer he stayed on the older tires.

Caterham driver Giedo van der Garde's left rear wheel came off entirely and he also had to retire.

It was a busy afternoon in the pits as Sauber released Nico Hulkenberg too early and he bumped into the back of a Toro Rosso and with Pastor Maldonado ? last year's surprise winner ? pitting in the wrong place.

Alfa Romeo Finance | A Ezbukz Blog For Financial Help

Alfa Romeo introduced the MiTo in 2008; it is a supermini that competes with the likes of Audi's new A1 and the Mini. The little three door hatchback is front wheel drive, just like most of its competitors, resulting in an exciting and lively driving experience.

The name MiTo is an abbreviation of the cities Milano (Milan) and Torino (Turin), it was designed in Milan and was assembled in the Torino; the name is also a play on the Italian word "mito," meaning "myth" or "legend."

Like most new Alfa Romeos the MiTo comes with "Alfa DNA" which is a system that lets the driver choose between different drive settings; Dynamic, Normal, and All-Weather. The selected setting changes the behaviour of the engine, the braking, steering, suspension and gearbox. The MiTo also features a Q2 electronic differential on the front wheels, this system allows for faster and tighter cornering without any loss of traction.

The new MiTo in Guildford is available with a diesel or petrol engine, the petrol engine is fundamentally a 1.4 litre unit with different power output levels. The petrol unit also comes with the new MultiAir technology which responds more keenly and is cleaner than conventional engines. The diesel engine is available as either a 1.3 litre or a 1.6 litre, the bigger diesel is much livelier but equally lively, the smaller seems more refined and brisk.

Being a sporty supermini the MiTo tries to handle like a fully fledge sports car, the ride is quite firm and harsh but that hasn't resulted to precise cornering, the MiTo's cornering ability could be better. The Sportiest trim, the Cloverleaf has the best suspension set-up, it corners better and the ride is much more forgiving.

(AP) ? Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif looked poised to return to office with a resounding election victory ? a mandate that could make it easier to tackle the country's daunting problems, including growing power outages, weak economic growth and shaky government finances.

Questions remain, however, about Sharif's stance on another key issue: violent Islamic extremism. Critics have accused his party of being soft on radicals because it hasn't cracked down on militant groups in its stronghold of Punjab province. The United States has pushed Pakistan for years to take stronger action against Islamic militants whose fighters stage cross-border attacks against American troops in Afghanistan.

As unofficial returns rolled in Sunday, a day after the election, state TV estimates put Sharif close to the majority in the national assembly needed to govern outright for the next five years. Even if he falls short of that threshold, independent candidates almost certain to swing in Sharif's favor would give his Pakistan Muslim League-N party a ruling majority.

That would put the 63-year-old Sharif in a much stronger position than the outgoing Pakistan People's Party, which ruled for five years with a weak coalition that was often on the verge of collapse.

Pakistan suffers from a growing energy crisis, with some areas experiencing power outages for up to 18 hours a day. That has seriously hurt the economy, pushing growth below 4 percent a year. The country needs a growth rate of twice that to provide jobs for its expanding population of 180 million.

Ballooning energy subsidies and payments to keep failing public enterprises afloat have steadily eaten away at the government's finances, forcing the country to seek another unpopular bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Pakistan also has an ineffective tax system, depriving the government of funds.

Sharif, the son of a wealthy industrialist, is seen by many as more likely to tackle the country's economic problems effectively because much of his party's support comes from businessmen. He is also expected to push for better relations with Pakistan's archenemy and neighbor India, which could help the economy.

The Pakistan People's Party was widely perceived to have done little on the economic front.

"Anything better than zero and you have already improved on the PPP's performance in terms of managing the economy," said Cyril Almeida, a columnist for Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.

The former ruling party was soundly beaten in Saturday's election. Sharif's party was leading in contests for 127 seats, just short of the 137 directly elected seats needed to form a majority, state TV said.

The PPP was ahead in contests for 32 national assembly seats, a significant drop from the 91 seats the party won in the 2008 election.

Independent candidates were leading in more than 20 contests, and they historically join the party that forms the government, which would leave the Pakistan Muslim League-N with a majority.

"I'm sure business and the economy will be far better in a couple of years," said Amir Nayaz, one of hundreds of Sharif supporters who gathered outside his home in Punjab's capital, Lahore, beating on drums, dancing and chanting slogans.

It was a remarkable comeback for the two-time prime minister, who was toppled in a 1999 coup by then-army chief Gen. Pervez Musharraf and was sent into exile in Saudi Arabia for years. He returned in 2007, and his party came in second in elections the following year.

Over the last five years, Sharif put steady pressure on the PPP-led government. But because he was wary of army interference, he never applied enough pressure to threaten the government's hold on power. That attitude helped enable parliament to complete its term and transfer power in democratic elections for the first time since the country was founded in 1947.

President Barack Obama praised "the historic peaceful and transparent transfer of civilian power."

In an ironic twist, the man who toppled Sharif in a military coup, Musharraf, is currently under house arrest after returning from self-imposed exile. Sharif's government will have to decide whether to bring treason charges against Musharraf in the Supreme Court.

Sharif's party managed to weather a serious challenge from former cricket star Imran Khan, whose criticism of traditional politicians energized the youth. Even though Khan failed to deliver his promised "political tsunami," his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party did much better than it had historically.

It was leading in contests for 31 national assembly seats, state TV said, and appeared to be in position to possibly form the government in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The party boycotted elections in 2008 and only won one national assembly seat in 2002.

Khan claimed in a video message that there was vote rigging in Punjab and in the southern city of Karachi. The election commission has said it is investigating reports of problems with the election in Karachi and is re-doing the vote at 40 polling stations in one constituency of the city.

The Pakistani Taliban, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government, tried to derail the election with attacks. More than 150 people were killed with guns and bombs in the run-up to the election, including 29 on election day.

The deadly campaign failed to keep people away from the polls. Turnout was nearly 60 percent, the highest in more than 40 years, the election commission said. But the violence, which mainly targeted secular parties, may have helped candidates seen as taking a softer line toward the militants, like Sharif and Khan, because they were able to campaign more freely.

Sharif has called for negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban but hasn't said clearly whether he thinks army operations against the militants should continue until peace is achieved. His party, which has ruled Punjab for the past five years, has not taken any clear action against the powerful Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group based in that province. Those militants are blamed for the 2008 attack on the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

"I don't think that these guys have enough understanding of the risk," said Imtiaz Gul, director of the Islamabad-based Center for Research and Security Studies, referring to Sharif's party members. "They think they cannot afford to stoke unnecessary trouble for them by cracking down on people or groups who are extremists or terrorists."

It's also unclear what Sharif's policy will be toward neighboring Afghanistan, where the U.S. plans to withdraw most of its combat troops by 2014 and is seeking help from Pakistan to negotiate peace with the Afghan Taliban. Pakistan and Afghanistan have long had tense relations.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai promised "full cooperation" with Pakistan's new government Sunday, but alluded to the often-hostile relationship between the two countries and suspicions that Islamabad has aided insurgents and contributed to Afghanistan's instability.

"We hope that the new elected government provides the ground for peace and brotherhood with Afghanistan" and cooperates "in rooting out terrorist sanctuaries," he said.

The U.S. and Pakistan have also had a troubled relationship, especially after the 2011 American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani army town.

Sharif is expected to be somewhat more nationalistic and protective of state sovereignty when it comes to relations with the U.S. than the outgoing government. He defied U.S. opposition to Pakistan's nuclear test in 1998 and has criticized unpopular American drone attacks targeting militants in the country. But that doesn't mean the relationship will radically change, especially since the army often plays a dominant role in foreign policy issues.

"At the end of the day, Sharif is a businessman, and he looks at these things through a kind of pragmatic analysis," Almedia said. "I don't see any reason for him to want ties with U.S. to be poor, tense or troublesome."
